General Motors announced today that it will expand the vehicle-to-home (V2H) bidirectional charging technology to its entire range of electric vehicles based on the Ultium platform by the 2026 model year.
The first vehicles to receive this technology will include the previously announced 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST, followed by the GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, the 2024 Equinox EV, the 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ, and the upcoming Cadillac ESCALADE IQ, set to be unveiled on August 9th.
Building upon the company’s strategy to offer an expanding range of energy management products and services through GM Energy, V2H will add an intriguing option for electric vehicle drivers. They will be able to transfer energy from their vehicle to their appropriately equipped home whenever they desire. This technology will enable GM EV owners to store and transfer energy to offset peak electricity demands or mitigate the impact of power outages.
Customers will be able to utilize the V2H technology on compatible GM electric vehicles through the available GM Energy Ultium Home offerings, as well as the GM Energy Cloud, a software platform that will enable users to manage the energy transfer between applicable and connected GM Energy assets and the home.
Let’s remember that, as per the information provided by GMC last June, the Ultium V2H package will consist of a bidirectional AC charging station with a power of 19.2 kW, an inverter, a gateway, and a dark start battery. The inverter will be able to supply a power output of 9.6 kW to the home. A home disconnection device from the grid will also be included.
The ‘Ultium Home Energy’ package, on the other hand, will add the option to store energy in batteries with capacities of 10.6 kWh and 17.7 kWh.
It will also be possible to integrate solar energy production through SunPower, GMC’s exclusive solar provider.
